Founded in 2023 by Artistic Director and dancer Sophie Williams, the San Diego based Pointeworks will present COMPOSITIONS: An Evening of Katie Jenkins on Sunday, October 18, 2026 at 7:30 pm at the Balboa Theatre. The performance will feature dancers from across the country including Los Angeles Ballet Artists Kate Inoue and Marcos Ramírez. The three works presented on the program were all choreographed by women and each piece will be performed to live music. Having its premiere, Where No Storms Come, choreographed by Hélène Simoneau, was created during a two-week Pointeworks residency at Westside School of Ballet and DC Dance in Los Angeles.

Now based in New York, Pointeworks’ resident composer Katie Jenkins is an award-winning Welsh composer and producer. One of her latest accomplishments was she conducted excerpts of Symffoni’r Môr Mawr: A Transatlantic Symphony at the Library of Congress as part of Wales’ musical gift marking 250 years of American independence. Her accomplishments are too numerous to mention in this article, but you can read her full bio HERE.

In creating Pointeworks, one of Williams’ visions is to amplify female voices in ballet and under her leadership the company has commissioned new works and performed to sold out houses in San Diego and New York City.

The three works on COMPOSITIONS: An Evening of Katie Jenkins are Chasing Shadows by Laine Habony, set to Jenkins’ score for solo piano, performed live by Joshua Mhoon; Moving Forces by Jacquelyn Long, a work for six dancers with live piano and violin, featuring Mhoon and violinist Julia Choi; and Where No Storms Come by Hélène Simoneau, a world premiere set to Jenkins’ newly commissioned score for live string quartet bringing together musicians from NYC to CA.

Born in Texas, Laine Habony is a member of New York City’s corps de ballet. Also interested in creating dances, Habony choreographed her first ballet at age 15. Her work has been seen in NYCB’s First Steps Program in 2020 and 2022, the SABxNYCB Toulmin Female Choreography Workshop, Ballet Sun Valley Dance Festival, and others. Her Chasing Shadows for Pointeworks was very well received at its 2025 New York City premiere.

Originally from Virginia, choreographer and dancer Jacquelyn Long is currently based in Houston, Texas. In addition to creating a new work for Pointeworks, Long has choreographed 8 works for Houston Ballet, Houston Ballet II, and Ballet Virginia. She is also an accomplished and gifted dancer.

Originally from Canada, choreographer Hélène Simoneau is a Guggenheim Fellow, a New York City Center Choreography Fellow, and was awarded first place for Choreography at the 13th Internationales Solo-Tanz-Theater Festival in Stuttgart, Germany, for her solo “the gentleness was in her hands.” Her work has also been commissioned by Oregon Ballet Theater, Vitacca Ballet, BalletX, and others.

Sophie Williams began her ballet training at Ballet Arte Academy of Classical Ballet under Sara Viale and Erlends Zieminch. She has performed with several companies including Royal New Zealand Ballet, Texas Ballet Theatre, Complexions, and Richmond Ballet. She has worked with Molly Lynch’s Choreographers Initiative in Irvine, CA. as well as Chamber Dance Project in Washington, D.C.

All ballet companies have periods in between seasons where its dancers are unemployed. Pointeworks has ventured to take on this challenge. In the fall 2026, “the company pays dancers a competitive $1,500 per week, supporting the rehearsal time and artistic collaboration that new work requires.” – Pointeworks press release.

The company strives to involve its community and to inspire young dancers. During its short history, Pointeworks has launched the Mentorship Program and Sponsor a Seat Program.

Through its Mentorship Program, Pointeworks aim is “to empower the next generation of dancers with the knowledge, perspective, and experience needed to thrive—not just as emerging professionals, but throughout their entire careers.”
