Mark DeGarmo Dance has announced the Launching of its 2022 Virtual Salon Performance Series for Social Change on Zoom Thursday, January 6, 2022 at 7PM ET. The series will feature four international, emerging, BIPOC, and women performing artists offering a sharing of works-in-progress with a facilitated audience response curated and facilitated by Executive & Artistic Director of MDD Dr. Mark DeGarmo. DeGarmo has also had a career is a professional dancer, choreographer, writer, and researcher. The four artists who are based in New York and Los Angeles include Paramita Bhattacharyya (West Hills, CA), Aviva Geismar (Manhattan, NY), Barbara Mahler (Queens, NY), and Makayla Peterson (Brooklyn, NY).

About the Artists

Paramita Bhattacharyya is an internationally acclaimed Los Angeles-based Kathak exponent recognized by the World Book of Records, London and recipient of numerous dance awards, including Nritya Bhushan.

Aviva Geismar is a choreographer, dancer, dance educator and artistic director of Drastic Action, a NYC-based contemporary dance company. Since 1989, she has been creating a body of thought-provoking works, grounded in a full-bodied physicality.

Barbara Mahler is an active member of the NYC dance community for 35 years, and works as choreographer, performer, movement educator, and practitioner of Klein Technique and the healing modality of Zero Balancing.

Makayla Peterson is the Brooklyn-based artistic director of her dance collective Monét Movement productions: The Collective, founded in 2020. Her 9-person work-in-progress celebrates the love and unity ingrained in Caribbean culture.

Mark DeGarmo, Ph.D., B.F.A. is a New York City-based dancer/performer, choreographer, writer, and researcher who hails from a rural New York State farming community. He is Founder, Executive & Artistic Director of Mark DeGarmo Dance. DanceTeacher Magazine highlighted DeGarmo’s accomplishments in its June 2017 cover feature article and the Martha Hill Dance Fund recognized his achievements with its 2015 Mid-Career Award.
