On that same program is Taylor’s humorous and highly entertaining work COMPANY B (1991) set to music sung by the swing and boogie-woogie era singing group, The Andrew Sisters. Led by choreographers Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson, Complexions Contemporary Ballet returns to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion June 16 – 18, 2023 with a what is described as Mixed repertory: Woke and Love Rocks. The works are described on TMC’s website as “Set to music by Kendrick Lamar, Logic, Drake, Diplo and others, WOKE is a bold and dynamic one-act ballet featuring the full company that examines our humanity in conjunction with the enlightened awareness of today’s generation. Rock meets ballet in LOVE ROCKS, with music by GRAMMY® Award-winning singer-songwriter Lenny Kravitz, whose retro musical style lays a foundation for passionate storytelling through edgy, athletic and theatrical movement. Another work not previously seen in Los Angeles is the Dutch National Ballet’s full-length ballet FRIDA, created by Colombian-Belgian choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa to music by British composer Peter Salem, performed by a live orchestra. Frida is inspired by the life story of Frida Kahlo, one of the 20th century’s most intriguing artist who was born in Mexico. Kahlo is most remembered for her self-portraits painted in vibrant colors, her activism for women’s rights, and her life-long physical pain caused by a near fatal bus accident.
