The Los Angeles Dance Shorts Film Festival Open for 2021 Submissions

The Los Angeles Dance Shorts Film Festival is celebrating its fifth year. The festival began in June of 2017 with the work of filmmakers from around the world and for a couple of years was held at the Mimoda dance studio in mid-city Los Angeles. Last year, due to the pandemic, the festival was held online. Everyone is hoping that the pandemic will soon be behind us, allowing the festival to be held in-person.

Organizers and Co-Directors Nicole Manoochehri and Olivia Mia Orozco just announced that beginning May 1, 2021 Los Angeles Dance Shorts Film Festival will be open for accepting submissions from dance filmmakers for a November 2021 film festival event. Manoochehri is a storyteller, dancer, filmmaker and the founder of the Los Angeles Dance Shorts Film Festival. Orozco is a dancer, actress, choreographer and filmmaker who became Co-director of the Los Angeles Dance Shorts Film Festival in 2019.

Jeff Slayton

Jeff has had a long and influential career as a dancer, choreographer, and educator. Born in Virginia in 1945, Slayton began dancing as a child in order to correct his condition of hip dysplasia. He enjoyed a performance career in New York dancing for Merce Cunningham, Viola Farber and others. In 1978 he moved to Long Beach, CA. where began teaching at California State University, Long Beach as a part time faculty member. He became a full time faculty member in 1986 and continued to teach at CSULB until 1999. Jeff Slayton was one of the faculty members that helped design the Dance Center at CSULB as well as develop and implement the BFA, MFA and MA degree programs. While in Long Beach, he formed his own company, Jeff Slayton & Dancers, that operated from 1978 to 1983. He is also the author of two books, "The Prickly Rose: A Biography of Viola Farber" and "Dancing Toward Sanity". Most recently, Slayton was the recipient of the Los Angeles Dance Festival’s 2024 Lifetime Achievement in Service to the Field of Dance Award.
