On June 9 – 12, 2022, The Broad Stage will present Mark Morris Dance Group & Music Ensemble in Mozart Dances with choreography by Artistic Director Mark Morris. The program at The Broad Stage features the world premiere chamber arrangement of Piano Concerto No. 27 in B-flat major, K. 595 (1791) by Mark Morris Dance Group (MMDG) Music Director Colin Fowler, along with Piano Concerto No. 11 in F major, K. 413 (1782-83) and Sonata in D major for Two Pianos, K. 448 (1781), all performed live on The Broad Stage’s mainstage. Tickets are on sale now.

Because of his musicality and prolific dance making, some have referred to Morris as “the Mozart of Modern Dance.” With that in mind, Morris created Mozart Dances in honor of the Salzburg, Austria-born composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart who composed over 800 works before he died at the young age of 35. He was considered a musical genius and one of the most of influential composers of the Classical period (roughly between 1730 and 1820). Since founding his company in 1980, Morris has created over 150 works that span modern dance, ballet, and opera.

Morris acknowledges that his collaborators are vital to his work. Among them are scenic designer Howard Hodgkin; costume designer Martin Pakledinaz; and lighting design James F. Ingalls, all of whom are renowned artists in their field and partners in fulfilling Mark Morris’ vision for each dance work.

Mark Morris said of Mozart Dances, “I started hearing the concertos as characters … there’s an incredible and touching relationship between the piano in relation to the orchestra. The music to me is thrilling, strange in its unusual combination, and it exactly what this dance came from.”

Alastair Macaulay said in The New York Times, “Throughout Mozart Dances, Mark Morris emerges as the most artfully musical choreographer alive.”
