As the world slowly opens up following over 15 months of being held hostage by the COVID pandemic, dance is returning to the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts. For a four night run, Thursday – Sunday (August 12 through 15, 2021) at 8 pm on The Wallis’ outdoor stage Summer @ The Wallis will present the world premiere of Heidi Duckler Dance’s The Chandelier, a site-specific work choreographed and directed by company Founder/Artistic Director Heidi Duckler.

Based on a novel of the same title by Brazilian author Clarice Lispector, Duckler created The Chandelier specifically for The Wallis. The work was originally scheduled to be performed at the beginning of last year, just prior to The Wallis being forced to closed it doors. “Duckler animates the book’s interior monologues and devises characters from odd fragments of dialogue to create a moving portrait of a family living amid the ruins of a colonial society. Through layers of imagery, acts of repetition and audience engagement, Duckler explores the contrasting ideas of impermanence and the irrevocable.” The Wallis press release

“Heidi Ducker Dance, a Los Angeles treasure, has helped expand the dance genre with its unique site-specific work,” states The Wallis’ Artistic Director Paul Crewes. “The unexpected locations in which the company performs become compelling central figures in their work. We are excited that Heidi has set The Chandelier at The Wallis, which will, no doubt, showcase the landmark venue as a performance space in a fascinating new light.”

Duckler founded her company Heidi Duckler Dance in 1985 and over the years she has become to be considered one of the masters of site-specific dance in Los Angeles and beyond. Duckler is a very prolific choreographer, continuously transforming non-traditional spaces and buildings such as empty movie theaters, parks, sculptures, twin masted ships, hospital buildings, laundromats, warehouses, subway terminals, the Los Angeles Police Academy, and more into exciting performance venues. As stated by the LA Weekly, “Many choreographers intermittently offer site-specific work in L.A., but when it comes to Heidi Duckler Dance, nobody does it better.”
