Solstice spins

Returning to one of its favorite outdoor venues, those masters of the site-specific at Heidi Duckler Dance host a new edition of Ebb & Flow. This version recruits an array of notable outside collaborators including Elena Brocade, Deborah Brockus, Taylor Donofrio, Darrel ‘Friidom’ Dunn, Beatriz Vasquez’ 3-19 Dance Art, and Nat Wilson.  Bib Bauer, Lydia Janbay and Sunrise Transparence have their own collaboration. Current artist-in-residence Ching Ching Wong offers his newest, Parts and Labor, and makes use of the company’s endearing “dancemobile.” Wander the park and catch all the different dances at LA State Historic Park, 1245 N. Toot toot Toogie

Next up at the Dance at the Odyssey festival, choreographer Teresa Toogie Barcelo collaborates with composer Joe Berry and fiber sculptor Mimi Haddon for the premiere of Matanoia. Dance, puppetry, music, and design come into play in this consideration of transformation. At Last!

Barcelona-born Sonia Olla and members of Santa Barbara’s Zermeño Dance Academy provide the dance component with Spanish singers and musicians in Vida Flamenca’s XIa Festival Cumbre Flamenca. The challenges of bringing international artists from Spain during the pandemic prompted multiple postponements of this event. Something in the way she moves

Keeping a move on

When LA Dance Moves debuted Back to the Heart last summer in the early days of post-pandemic reopening, only a severely restricted audience was able to view it live. Choreographer Nancy Paradis and her collaborators have developed a filmed version capturing the dancers performing to Frederick Keeve’s improvisational piano composition.
