Performa Choreographic Incubator is a culturally-responsive laboratory for new dance led by Los Angeles and Philadelphia based choreographer, producer, and community educator, Adam Kerbel. On March 31, 2025 Kerbel will bring his unique organization to L.A. Dance Project studios “offering a unique space for dance artists to push boundaries, collaborate, and experiment in a dynamic 5-week workshop. …this incubator provides dancers of all levels with the freedom to develop new movement work in a peer-driven, open-air environment.” Press release
Every artist in Los Angeles knows as the city continues to be overdeveloped, creative spaces become less and less affordable. Performa is responding to this problem by offering a necessary platform for artists to experiment, create, and flourish without any restrictions or demands, movement styles, or finished performances. It is an opportunity for artists to take risks and to push their creative boundaries in a safe and nourishing environment.
“We need spaces where artists can cultivate their practice in community at an affordable cost. And it’s got to be exciting” says Kerbel. “At Performa, there are no expectations to fit into a specific aesthetic or gain approval. It’s about allowing your creative voice to blossom, trying things, taking risks and contributing to the conversation around live dance today.”
From Performa’s press release:
From March 31 to April 28, dancers and movement artists of all styles can drop in to build, test, and discuss their work in real-time. Performa fosters both individual expression and collective learning in an environment that values experimentation over perfection. Participants will be guided by Kerbel’s mentorship, developed in collaboration with The Music Center, and will have the chance to document their work professionally through a partnership with Pasadena-based Little Blue World Photography.
Financial assistance is available for those affected by wildfires and gentrification, ensuring the workshop is accessible to a diverse range of artists and communities. Sessions are designed for dancers of all levels, with flexible pricing options starting at just $9 for observation seating.
