Theatre Raymond Kabbaz is happy to welcome on stage the LA-based dance company Kybele Dance Theater (KDT). KDT’s designs awaken the audience with accenting forgotten moments of life through fusing contemporary dance with Turkish imagery through a diverse repertory created to inspire, think, and educate.

Pushing the physical body to its limits for electrifying moments on stage amidst fearless risk which designs moments of beauty and surprise as well as the unusual and bizarre is the essence of choreographer Seda Aybay’s work. Her approach to movement evolved to include quick weight shift, use of momentum and gravity with refined abstract versions of daily gestures. She believes in the clean lines of classicism swiftly blending into the earthiness of modern dance and the gutsiness of contemporary.

Karen Sherman makes performances that incorporate her background in dance, writing, theater, music, and the handyman arts. Her diverse background, as well as over two decades of experience working in nearly every facet of arts production as a technical director, production manager, stage technician and scenic/sound designer, informs each aspect of her artwork. Though primarily situated in the dance world, her interdisciplinary work resists orthodoxy and is known for its inventiveness, wit and nuanced complexity. Her newest piece, Soft Goods, an examination of the lives lived backstage, illuminates the lonesomeness of theaters, the spectral beauty of a lighting focus, the choreography of labor, the labor of dance and the human hand behind stage art. Created in collaboration with an ensemble of stage technicians and dancers, and structured as a live load-in and technical rehearsal for a performance that never happens, Soft Goods is a meditation on work, life, loss and occupational self-obliteration.

Invertigo Dance Theatre, founded by Artistic Director Laura Karlin and led by Executive Director Tara Aesquivel, launches its 10th Anniversary Celebration with an evening of dance on Sunday, October 22 at 6 pm at the Moss Theatre (3131 Olympic Blvd., Santa Monica 90404). The retrospective event celebrates the company’s breadth of artistic accomplishments through the performance of two works— Interior Design, about a couple moving into a new space together, and Formulae & Fairy Tales, based on the life of mathematical genius and World War II code-breaker Alan Turing. The evening includes presentations from Invertigo’s Dancing Through Parkinson’s and Invert/ED community programs.
Invertigo’s philosophy centers on the principle of connection. This connection starts within performers’ bodies, expands to fellow dancers onstage, engages live audiences, and encompasses the greater community. The result is virtuosic and athletic dance which employs bone-deep movement in the service of storytelling. Invertigo frames its dance in a greater theatrical context, so that each action, character and scene contributes to moving the piece’s dramatic arc forward. Dancers communicate character by what manifests through their body. All pieces are driven by dance, with artists enhancing the narrative with dialogue, music-making, and puppetry.
